Around 2001 I built a series of architectural sculptures using stacked wood blocks. I always loved the series of pieces I made, but found the scale to be a little awkward in that they were too small to sit on the floor, but too large to sit on all but the largest tables. I have been keen to revisit this style of work lately and after an opportunity arose to show some of my original sculptures that I still had I motivated and started a series of minis.
The first was inspired by a coal tower that used to be in Ellenville, NY. The tower was torn down in the lates 90’s but always had a place in my memory. I worked strictly from my recollection. I built this tower out of reclaimed cherry that used to be baseboard in a local architectural firm that remodeled.

I had a few left over layers from the coal tower that I had removed in order to get the scale just right. That sent me down on an even smaller piece which became the scale that I have chosen to pursue for my new series of minis. The first is also in reclaimed cherry and most of the rest are maple, often painted black and varnished.
